This comes in several phrases: “In my day of trouble I sought the Lord” “I stretched out my hand” “I meditate within my heart and my soul makes diligent search”. The first part of this psalm is based on our need to seek and to search. Like all the psalms, this one applies to the inner state of the Lord while he was in the world, experiencing changing states, feeling his separation and then remembering the effects of previous returns to union with the divine, which now restore him from being in deep anguish. As he has gone to the Lord in his need, so the Lord now comes to him, and is able to come because his state has become open and receptive. The second half of the psalm, once the speaker has brought himself back before the Lord, becomes a litany of blessings and confirmations about the Lord in a series that seems to never end, about things that return to the questioner in abundance.
This questioning about the Lord becomes the turning point. Then come various memories of past experiences, of having felt the sense of the Lord’s absence, which leads on to many questions about the Lord’s love, help, presence, and forgetfulness of one who suffers in this way. It begins with a sense of personal anguish during the spirit’s night-time, and then of remembering the Lord and seeking him, and finding him again through diligent searching.
